Modest New Money

So I said that I would return to the world of regular blogging many centuries ago. And I didn’t. Even though one of my faithful readers actually promised to continue reading!

 

 

 

The topic of today is something that bugged me a little on a platform that is a bigger part of my life now than I would have ever imagined: Twitter! I even remember blogging against its use and any potential benefits. But here I am; a regular tweeter, indulging in the vain thoughts and opinions of almost anyone I choose on a daily (hourly) basis.

 

 

 

I tend to voice my opinion with less finesse and grace than is required of a young female. It kind of just explodes out of me, I’m learning a lot about self control actually and how little of it I really have in certain areas.

 

 

 

Anyway onto the topic at hand. Definitions always help to create parameters so here are a few important ones:

 

 

 

Modesty: The quality or state of being unassuming or moderate in the estimation of one's abilities.

 

  

Old Money: Established, inherited wealth. Those whose families have been wealthy for many generations.

 

New Money: A fortune recently acquired or as the urban dictionary states, the opposite of Paris Hilton.

 

 

( I don't actually know if Zucky is entirely new money - but you get the point.)

 

 

There are a select few who have come into either a great graduate job, worked their way partially up the career ladder or have a small start-up which is doing quite well. Kudos to them, I would never want to undermine their achievements. However, when I see statements like:

  

I would never brag about my money in public… but I’m far from broke’ (Boasting)

 

 ‘I earn way more than some of these people buying Hermes belts… but I never talk about it’ (Talking about it)

 

‘I have so many Loubs I just don’t even talk about it… It means nothing to me haha’ (Talking about it and meaning something)

 

 

‘I feel sorry for people who buy things on credit… desperately trying to look new money’ (Ignorant and… just annoying)

 

 

 

I just think who on earth do these people think they are? At a time when having any earnings at all is such a sensitive issue, especially with those between 21 and 26;

 

 

 

I don’t understand how people have the audacity to make such statements. Additionally the same people consider themselves to be sitting on the fortune defined in the definition of New Money…. And really are not.

 

 

Deception only works in the presence of ignorance:

 

  

If you are an employee for a firm with anything from 100 – 6000 employees, and in the first two years of your career your salary is most likely less than £50,000. I’ll give some examples for those who are thinking about their next move with delusions of grandeur firmly plastered to their brains.

  

• After 5 years of medical training a new doctor in London can expect: £23,000 - 28,000.

• After some legal training, law school, conversion courses and a few sucker punches to your sanity and self esteem, a trainee solicitor in a TOP law firm can expect: £34,000 - £45,000.

• After studying anything to go to a good uni and get the all important 2:1 and applying to a general grad scheme/ entry level job (non investment bank), one can expect: £25,000 - £40,000

• Being a maths / engineering / general boff for a few years and landing a great investment banking job can get you about £35,000 - £50,000.

• Starting a company which has some regular customers, a great brand and reputation can get you between £0 - £40,000 (profit).

  

Please note that this is in the first few years of your career, there is a chance that some of these salaries will make leaps and bound into the £100k’s and when it comes to a business even the millions. But if no one has ever heard of your companies, that you are the CEO of all three, at the same time this is HIGHLY unlikely.

 

I really wish that people would be honest about where they are, what it took to get them there and not generate insecurities by deceptively pumping themselves up with dubious little statements. If someone wants to spend £1000 on shoes and they earn less than you then so be it, they may actually just be way better at managing their money and setting achievable goals. They are not to be looked down on.

 

 

 

Re Credit – don’t get me started… the whole financial system is built on credit. The world’s billionaires use more credit than most could even fathom. Managed well, credit is actually what makes people come into New Money.

Reviving the Outlet

Hey all,

Though I'm pretty sure that no-one is reading this anymore I know that someone will at some point. Its just a quick post to say hi. I'm reviving my blogging and intend to keep it both topical and simple. It would be nice to interact with people but I have found that blogging is also a great outlet. So look out for some posts in the next few days (or weeks).

Hi Ladies and Gentlemen ahem just clearing my throat before a small rant. I know its awfully rude of me to only come back here and update you with my wonderful thoughts when I am pushed to the point of furious insanity BUT I have a pet peeve – which is entirely unjustified but nonetheless is there.

My enemy is the statement ‘I should copyright that’ or when people come up with something that they believe is genius… and usually just isn’t and shouts out ‘Copyright!’ thinking that this grants them something OR [this is the actual nemesis of the mind. Like my brain blows up…] when someone is purporting to create a TRADEMARK or LOGO for their business and puts a little C with a circle around it and the year……………

So I know not everyone studies the law, and despite how many text messages I send to David requesting that sex education should be scrapped and law should be implemented into the national curriculum it is yet to happen but I’m going to give everyone a little lesson. Feel free to send it to all of your friends because quite frankly if you are serious about whatever creative medium you have dedicated your life to, a little research will make you sound even more well erm. I don’t know. Serious.

Copyright DOES NOT REQUIRE REGISTRATION (I will only say that once). It basically allows you to say ‘hey that’s my work’ but the work has to be original. 

SO if you come up with a song called ‘Crazy in Hate’ and start singing ‘your hate’s got me looking so crazy right now, your haaate….etc’ then its not really erm original is it? (she doesn't seem to think so)

Original means NOT COPIED FROM ANOTHER WORK.

Your work also have to be one of the following:

Literary, musical. Dramatic, artistic, a film, a sound recording, a broadcast or a typographical arrangement (like the way you lay something out).

How is the work protected- IT IS AUTOMATIC AT THE MOMENT THE WORK IS FIXED IN PERMANENT FORM so if you have a song and you record that… I’ll let you work out the rest.

It lasts for another 70 years after you die so you won’t have to have your grand children roaming the street shouting copyright. The lawyers… as ruthless as we are are actually quite smart – so erm copyright is therefore quite smart too.

Now when it comes to Trademarks and that little TM… I’ll save that for another day. Still have exams to pass!!

Oops I did it again.

The words of the ever famous Britney Spears may become more popular than she had ever anticipated. In a bid to rid the streets of asbo's and delinquent youths, the government has decided that if you do not pass your maths and english GCSE's then you must retake it... again, and again, and again until you pass!


Now I'm not normally one to side with the government but YES! I agree. I believe it is very difficult to get hired anywhere these days without even a C in these core subjects. And as for those with an entrepreneurial spirit, yes the veterans of booming business left school at 16 BUT something tells me they had more in their heads than dreams of compiling pound (or dollar) signs. 


The statistics are a little shocking with over 300,000 students not having a Maths or English GCSE grade  but do we think that it is the governments job to decide what these kids do with their lives? I do (for once!) I was actually inspired to write this blog this morning after reading a "ReTweet" on twitter that read: "the British education system is an embarisment" I must apologise to the person who retweeted this as there is a small chance that you are reading this. But I think that this is the exact type of thing that may be reduced ever so slightly if young people are pushed to get the  big C.


On the other side of things, it is still legal for a 16 year old to drop out of education altogether, and the same government who are proposing this have also axed the ever-vital incentive of £30 per week Educational Maintenance Allowance so one must ask oneself, if the kiddies decide that they do not want to go to college at all, then they are not forced to resit their GCSE's and... I'm sure you are catching my drift.

Lets wait for Nick Clegg to figure it out and see what he has to say about it.

Good morning, I had a dream.

It wasn't the Martin Luther kind but it would involve a neat relationship between blacks and whites. *gasp* calm down, I had a dream where walking into the office was not an array of tailored TM Lewin but rather an explosion of the Milanese runway. Gahh! Gaddafi and Galliano

Howdy, So I am back and in full swing I believe... we shall see what happens over the next few weeks. From the title of this blog, you can see who I am upset with right now. And its the G's. No not G as in Don or 'top general' (thats my bilingual part translating for you), rather its  Gaddafi and Galliano:

Lets start with the Libyan Leader. If you are anything like me, you will nod and 'ahhh' about a topic that everyone apparently knows so much about until you actually find out the facts. But if you happened to miss the wave of news reports on the situation because you were sitting exams that required you to answer the same question on s19(1) FSMA and whether confidentiality overrides disclosure over and over and over aga...-


I'm so sorry I was ranting and that is completely off topic! But did anybody else know that 'p' is not just a letter in the alphabet and is apparently part of a VERY IMPORTANT formula:  7/400 x (£1.5m – ‘p’) x PCTCT/’p’. 


Gosh I just can't stop! So being inspired by the somewhat successful overthrow in Egypt, the residents of Libya have taken to the streets to stand their ground in indignant protest. As the masses poured into the streets of Tripoli Muammar Gaddafi made it clear that he was not going to go without a fight. The Libyan leader has held his position for a massive 42 years. It is then no surprise that while the protesters are saying 'times up!', they have been shot at and the bloodshed and death toll has begun to make it look like just another middle-eastern-war-torn-country. 


BUT do not shut down, this is a pivotal moment in history and I believe that we as young people can fight through the desensitisation that the media has subjected us to. If these protests are successful it could have massive implications on other dictatorships and if not massive implications on the way Libya is governed moving forward. I mean can you even IMAGINE having David Cameron (i'm ignoring the other one on purpose) sitting in power for 42 years and refusing to shift, its deep stuff. Anyway this is me just saying watch this space.

Now as for Galliano, a man we have all grown to love whether we want to or not. For those of you that do not know who he is (i'll be the first to admit I heard his name for the first time last year when a friend of mine was chilling in his hotel room as part of her internship!), he is a super-duper, futuristic, furiously fantastic designer. He has currently been suspended from walking the polished halls of fashion house Christian Dior. WHYYY! you scream. Well it is not without reason. 


His marvellously skilled hands were unable to reach his mouth intime to stop him from making some rather violent remarks along the lines of 'your parents would have been gassed' (and no, he was not talking about the slang term that means talking nonsense) and other praise for Hitler in the presence of some unsuspecting Jews having a not-so-nice Latte.


Meh, it makes me a little furious when people think in such ways but being subjected to direct racism in the past it has made me realise it is a fact of life, people will think how they think and we just have to thicken our skin and deal with it. That being said this is only in reference to remarks, anything past that and people should take to the streets of Tripoli! I mean Trafalgar Square.

Also I'm coming back... quite soon. The first haul of law school is over tomorrow *insert yay here* and I feel like I need to fill you guys in on far too many things that have ground my legal gears.

I'm excited, I've missed you
